How Much Does It Cost To Hire A Copywriter?

Updated: Dec 11, 2021

How much hiring a copywriter will cost can depend on a number of factors. Here is a guide to help you know what to expect, and some tips on how you may be able to reduce the cost of hiring a copywriter without compromising on quality.

Understanding Your Quote

Copywriters usually quote by the project. You will be asked what the project involves, what the deliverables are (e.g. x number of emails, or a landing page of x number of words), and any other relevant information. Sometimes you may not know all of this, and a good copywriter will be able to discuss the different options available and come up with a solution which works for you.

Quoting by the project means that you know upfront what the total cost will be, and you don’t have to worry about any additional expenses. If you have multiple pieces of work you would like completing, you may receive a separate quote for each of these. Most copywriters have an hourly rate that they use to calculate their quotes, and then multiply their hourly rate by the total time that they expect the project to take.

If you have any questions about your quote, feel free to reach out to discuss these further. A good copywriter will be more than happy to explain the quote in a little more detail, provide any necessary clarifications, and suggest other effective solutions if the quote provided is not within your budget.

One thing to bear in mind is that just because your project requires a relatively small number of words, it doesn’t mean that it will be cheaper than a project requiring a higher word count. For example, a catchy tagline can take far longer to create than an About Page. For this reason you are unlikely to ever find a copywriter who is happy to be paid by the word.

Tips To Reduce The Cost of Copywriting Services

As discussed earlier, your quote is based on how much time your project is expected to take. If you are able to provide a brief containing the key information you would like included and background information about your business this will save time on research and therefore you may be able to negotiate a lower price.

Another option if you are on a budget is to give the amount you are willing to spend during your initial conversation (whether via email or video call) and then asking what options are available. For example, you may not be able to afford to get your website completely rewritten, but maybe you could afford to update the wording on your sales page, which will increase conversions and add real value. A knowledgeable copywriter will be able to consider your budget and give suggestions of solutions available to provide the biggest impact.

One other way in which you could try to negotiate a lower rate is to consider when you would like the work completed by. If it is urgent and will require your copywriter to re-prioritise existing projects and work on their days off then an additional fee may be charged for this. However, if your deadline is more flexible then work on your project can be slotted in around other more urgent tasks. If you can wait a while for the work to be completed this is definitely worth mentioning as it could reduce the amount you are quoted.

A Word Of Warning

Avoid freelance job sites which promote being able to hire a copywriter for a very low rate. If you receive a quote and go looking for someone on one of these sites who can do it much cheaper you are likely to end up with someone either very inexperienced, or someone who is unable or unwilling to give your project the time and dedication it deserves. You could well end up with copy that you are unable to use and end up having to hire someone else, which will end up costing you more in the long run in terms of both time and money.
