How To Find A Copywriter You Love Working With
Updated: Jan 14, 2022
There are many reasons why hiring a copywriter is a great idea. You may be lucky enough to have a copywriter reach out to you, or you may have come across one on social media who you think could be a good fit. How can you be sure that they will do great work and be committed to helping your business thrive?
Check Out Their Portfolio
Every copywriter should have a portfolio of their work, which is usually in the form of a website. Take a look through their previous work. Even if their portfolio doesn’t have any examples from within your industry, do you like how they have approached the project? Is it compelling? Is the writing well structured? Most copywriters will jump at the chance to learn about a new industry and apply their writing skills to new topics.
If you are looking for an example of a type of project which isn’t in their portfolio, feel free to ask if they have any additional samples of their work that they can share. Think of a portfolio as more of a ‘highlights reel’ rather than a list of everything that they have ever worked on.

Get To Know Them
Check out their website and social media platforms (if they use them). What is their background? Do they seem like someone who you would enjoy working with? If so, ask to schedule a call so you can see whether or not they are a good fit for both you and your business.
A call could be carried out either via zoom or on the phone. It is a great opportunity to discuss your project in more detail, and for your potential copywriter to ask any questions that they may have.
Make Your Expectations Clear
A good copywriter can give some guidance if you don’t quite know what it is you are looking for and present ideas that will add real value. However, it is important to be clear about any deadlines, availability expectations, and requirements that are important to you.
There’s no point hiring a copywriter who only works during evenings and weekends if you need to be able to contact them during the standard working day. Alternatively, if you expect your copywriter to be available outside of the standard working day it’s important to mention this too. Discussing any non-negotiables upfront will lead to a smoother journey all round.
What If You Still Aren't Sure?
Have you found someone who you think might be great to work with but still feel a little cautious? Why not ask them to complete a small project to give an idea if you are a good fit for each other (e.g. one webpage rather than a whole website). If it goes well you can hire them to complete the rest of the project, if not then you haven’t invested too much time and money.
