What Is Copywriting?
It is likely that you see many examples of copywriting everyday, but you may have never stopped to think about it before.
What Does A Copywriter Do?
A copywriter writes words which convince someone to take an action. These words are called ‘copy’. The purpose of the copy could be to persuade someone to make a purchase, sign up for a service, visit a website, go to an event, join a mailing list, or something else entirely. If what you are reading makes you feel compelled to take action, chances are it was written by a copywriter.

Examples Of Copywriting
Take a look in your email inbox and you will see various emails from companies who you have purchased from in the past or signed up to receive marketing emails from. These are great examples of copywriting as emails have to stand out in a busy inbox, make the reader feel compelled to open them, and have a clear call to action (e.g. to visit a website or make a purchase).
Consider how you came to be on the mailing list for these emails. Were you promised a free gift or a discount if you signed up? The webpage that gave you the details of this special offer was also most likely written by a copywriter!
Now consider the website that the link within the email takes you to. Is the wording clear and concise? Does it make the benefits of the product or service clear and guide you towards taking some sort of action? If so then you are again looking at the work of a copywriter.
These are a couple of examples which we see multiple times everyday. Billboards, adverts on trains and buses, leaflets, flyers, newspaper and magazine adverts and posters are also examples of copywriting.

Are Copywriting And Content Writing The Same Thing?
Copywriting is writing to persuade and/or sell, whereas content (e.g. blogs) is written with the purpose of informing, entertaining, and/or inspiring.
Content doesn’t specifically aim to encourage the reader to take a particular action, but it may leave them feeling inspired to check out the products or services which the company offers. For example, a blog about things to do in New York on a hotel booking site may inspire a reader to check out the hotels available in New York and consider booking a trip.
Why Hire A Copywriter?
Well written copy can be the difference between someone deciding to buy a product or deciding not to. A copywriter has undergone specific training on the key principles of writing effective copy which converts readers into customers.
